Google to discontinue Stadia gaming services three years after debut

Google LLC, an Alphabet Inc. subsidiary has recently announced that it would discontinue Stadia, a consumer gaming service, since, players were not sufficiently interested in it, despite being available for almost three years.

Notably, demand for video games has been slowed down from its pandemic highs, which is causing concern for gaming companies. The prospects for Stadia in the immediate future also appeared bleak, because soaring inflation has led some consumers to cut back on entertainment expenditure.

Although Stadia's strategy for providing game streaming to consumers was based on a solid technological basis, Phil Harrison, Vice President and General Manager of Stadia, stated that the service hasn't garnered the user momentum that was anticipated.

The business announced that it would reimburse all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store as well as any purchases of games and supplemental content made through the Stadia store.

For those unaware, a department within Google that was tasked with creating games for the platform was also launched in 2019 along with Stadia.

However, last year Google announced that it would cease internal Stadia game development, leaving the platform entirely reliant on titles from other game publishers and developers.

Stadia, in contrast to conventional consoles, allowed consumers to play games on gadgets like Android phones and Chromecast TV apps by transferring data straight from Google's server clusters with a USD 10 subscription fee per month.

In an effort to reach a far wider audience than just conventional gamers or people who couldn't buy an expensive Xbox or PlayStation console, Google generously invested in Stadia.

Additionally, another complaint among gamers was that the amount worth USD 60 didn't feel reasonable since the games were stored in the cloud.

Now with Stadia gone, the future of cloud gaming will now be shaped by Microsoft Corp.'s xCloud, Inc.'s Luna, and Nvidia Corporation's GeForce though players can still play and access their game libraries through January 18.
