GSK inks deal to manufacture 60 million Novavax vaccine doses in UK

Tens of millions of Novavax vaccine doses would reportedly be produced as well as packaged in north-east England, as per an official announcement by the country’s PM. UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, stated that a deal had been inked with GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) to secure 60 million vaccine doses at its Barnard Castle facility in County Durham.

GSK, the leading pharmaceutical firm, stated that it hoped that the process of fill and finish might start from May. Back in January, it was announced that the COVID-19 vaccine will be manufactured at the Fujifilm plant located in Billingham.

At present, Novavax is being assessed by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency).

The biotech firm behind the vaccine, also named Novavax, had recently announced that its vaccine was 96 per cent effective in preventing the COVID-19 caused by the original SARS-COV-2 strain. It is also 86 per cent effective against the Kent variant of coronavirus.

Johnson stated that the UK Vaccine Taskforce has worked in partnership with business to successfully deliver COVID-19 vaccines to the entire country, and this agreement would further continue to support UK’s approach.

Fill and finish is referred to as the process by which COVID-19 vaccines are packed up in vials, and prepared to be sent out to various vaccination clinics.

The initial plan was meant to take place in Europe once the vaccine was manufactured by north east plants. However, a deal has been agreed with GSK to do the production in the country.

Formally, the government stated that it is all part of their investment in the British life science business.

The plants in the north east have already begun manufacturing the 60 million vaccine doses ordered by the government. If the doses are approved by the regulator, then the supplies might be available in June.

President, GSK vaccines, Roger Connor, stated that the firm is pleased to support Novavax and the Vaccines Taskforce with this arrangement for the country. The facility in Barnard Castle is now managing the work required to manufacture the 60 million vaccine doses.
