Polands major hybrid BESS starts full-scale technology demonstration

Polands renewable energy sector got a major impetus recently, when the NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development organization), Hitachi, Ltd., Showa Denko Materials Co., Ltd., and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) have reportedly announced that Smart Grid Demonstration Project situated at the Bystra Wind Farm in northern Poland reached full-scale demonstration operation phase on September 25 and monitoring phase in June.

Sources cite that it is Polands biggest hybrid battery energy storage system project aimed at improving the renewable energy infrastructure of the nation. The project is supported by Polands Ministry of Climate and has been carried out in collaboration with Polish project partner firms including Energa Operator S.A., Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne S.A, and Energa OZE S.A.

The main aim of the project is to contribute to improving Polands renewable energy infrastructure by accomplishing secure green power grid operation along with reducing investment costs for power transmission equipment. This announcement marked the next step after the launch of an SPS (Special Protection Scheme) system, which commenced operation in Oct. 2019, strengthening the security of the grid and safeguarding the power system.

According to sources familiar with the knowledge of the matter, the project integrates high-capacity lead-acid storage batteries with high-output lithium-ion batteries to achieve high performance at low cost. The test operation will prove and validate the effectiveness of the functionality for easing short-term fluctuations in wind energy generation and delivering required reserve power for maintaining demand-supply balance.

This system will also be used to resolve problems related to transmission and extreme voltage distribution line overloads at the time power grid failure. In this demonstration project, the NEDO along with its partners will verify the effectiveness of several system functions and contribute to the surging ratio of wind energy and other clean energy sources in Poland.
