Tata Motors to invest $1Bn in commercial vehicles; will focus on EVs

by Pranali Mehta

India’s largest truck manufacturer, Tata Motors has hinted on making an investment of more than $1 billion over the next four to five years to reinvent the road map for its commercial vehicle business while focusing on electric vehicles, as per credible sources.

Leading in the passenger EV sector, the automaker is aiming to transition to new-age platforms that will deliver futuristic EVs in the commercial vehicle sector.

It is also expected that the architecture of these vehicles will be able to accommodate fossil-fueled vehicles such as CNG, LNG, or diesel powertrains, as compared to earlier when they would have to be re-engineered as an EV.

Girish Wagh, Executive Director of CV Business, Tata Motors, has expressed that the company is striving to be the leader in driving electrification in the CV marketplace, as it had done previously with conventional powertrains.

According to Mr. Wagh, the company is working on various options that can cater to short-range battery vehicles for their delivery, while also working on small CV offerings and gas-based fuel-cell EVs that will cater to more extended range.

He also added that the shift towards CNG will happen before that, and quickly as well.

Mr. Wagh explains that electrification in commercial vehicles will happen via gaseous fuel first, and with the improved distribution of CNG, it will be done at an accelerated rate. He has stated that the total cost of ownership parity will be in favor of electric rather than diesel soon, but that it may take EVs longer to achieve it over CNG.

When asked about the amount of investment, and whether the company is planning on setting up an EV subsidiary, Mr. Wagh declined to comment, but said that it is only being speculated as of now.
